A snippet about my blog
My blog was developed as a requirement for Marketing 411 as a way for students in the class to keep in touch and share as much information and as many resources as possible with each other. Each student in the class has been assigned a "marketing topic" to explore for the semester and relate that information to an assigned "team company".
My individual topic is one of the 4 p's of Marketing: PROMOTION. I thought I should first find a formal definition of "promotion" and I found a good one from a website called About.com. It defined promotion as "...communicating with the public in an attempt to influence them toward buying your products and/or services." It explained that promotion and adversiting are often used interchangeably; but actually promotion is a much broader term. Advertising is one part of promoting.
I also found another website for an organization called MAP for Nonprofits that had an online
"Free Management Library" where I found the following quote. (It breaks down some marketing terms and helped me better understand):
"... if the circus is coming to town and you paint a sign saying 'Circus Coming to the Fairground Saturday', that's advertising. If you put the sign on the back of an elephant and walk it into town, that's promotion. If the elephant walks through the mayor's flower bed, that's publicity. And if you get the mayor to laugh about it, that's public relations." If the town's citizens go the circus, you show them the many entertainment booths, explain how much fun they'll have spending money at the booths, answer their questions and ultimately, they spend a lot at the circus, that's sales.
My team company is Toyota. We will research the different marketing aspects of their hybrid vehicle the Prius in particular.

Lisa - I love the breakdown of the marketing terms! What a great find and an easy way to understand them. I'm glad we're on the same team!!
don't confuse promotion (your assigned topic) and sales promotion (one element of promotion, much like advertising is another element). You might also try the wiki encyclopedia, linked to the class blog for more definitions.
